Ages and Stages Questionnaire

Students who enter Children’s Outreach Project have the option to be assessed for developmental levels using the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ). It is recognized that parents and caregivers know their children best; therefore, the ASQ is typically sent home for parents and caregivers to fill out with their child. The results of this assessment are used to determine eligibility for therapy services and to assist teachers in structuring curriculum in a way that best meets the need of the student.

If your child is at C.O.P. for longer than 6 months you have the option to complete a post-test to demonstrate progress. These results are confidential and are available to parents at any time. For more information on the ASQ, please visit their website at: http://asq.uoregon.edu/

Social/Emotional

Children's Outreach Project offers a social/emotional tool called The Incredible Years (IY) Dinosaur program, which uses an evidence-based curriculum that has been praised as a model program by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence.  This program provides children, parents and teachers with strategies to promote healthy social and emotional development that helps prevent early school failure. The framework supports teachers to help children with special attention and tools that help to enhance appropriate behaviors, promote social skills and positive peer interactions, develop appropriate conflict-management skills, reduce conduct problems, and help children integrate into the classroom and develop positive friendships.  Teachers are trained to implement Dinosaur School using a variety of learning modalities, including using puppets as positive role models, video vignettes and role play practice. The curriculum includes 60 lesson plans for teachers to implement during small and large group activities.

Speech Language Therapy
Children’s Outreach Project offers Speech-Language therapy to assist children who demonstrate difficulty with articulation, tone and pitch, and/or fluency. Our speech therapist works with children on activities to strengthen oral motor control, establish language proficiency and learn to communicate with friends and family.

Early intervention can greatly minimize delays and help children reach their full potential. At Children’s Outreach Project, speech therapy services are delivered to students in age-appropriate small group settings weekly during the school year, with a focus on building social/communication skills, vocabulary and accurate pronunciation.

Occupational Therapy
Every day, children have or develop health conditions that seriously affect their ability to manage their daily lives and independence. Occupational therapy can help a child manage his/her environment by developing self-help skills, anger management techniques or basic coordination and dexterity.

Occupational therapists provide activities and strategies to aid children’s physical and mental development, which is especially important for preschoolers. Occupational therapy can help children gain the skills necessary for eating, playing, and interacting successfully with family and friends. At Children’s Outreach Project, occupational therapy services are delivered to students one-on-one or in small groups; either in the classroom or in our specially equipped therapy room.

Cognitive Support at C.O.P.
Cognitive difficulties before the age of five are common as children develop at different rates and learn in different ways. Sometimes, however, children exhibit signs of more severe developmental delays that may impact their later school performance unless intervention occurs early.

For this reason, Children’s Outreach Project offers one-on-one and small group support for children who indicate need. In most cases, support is given within the classroom and within the context of the classroom themes and activities. Children are given an opportunity to strengthen skills that will increase their ability to learn from the environment and help prepare them for the next step in their education. We welcome outside therapists into our classrooms at any time for observations and consultations. Also, because it is often difficult for parents to transport children to appointments during the day, we will make accommodations for therapists to meet with their clients at our facility.

ALL THERAPY SERVICES ARE OFFERED TO C.O.P. STUDENTS AT NO ADDITIONAL COST.

STUDENTS RECEIVING THERAPIES AT C.O.P. ARE ELIGIBLE FOR (AND MAY BE REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE IN) COORDINATED SERVICE MEETINGS, IN WHICH PARENTS, TEACHERS AND THERAPY PROVIDERS MEET TO DISCUSS PROGRESS, STRATEGIES AND GOALS FOR INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS.

It’s better to build children, than to repair adults.
